Former Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Ahtar began scathing criticism of Babar Azam after losing to India at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, bringing him questioning the idea of ”fraud” and his thoughts.
Speaking on the TV show, Akhtar dismissed the comparison between Babar and Virat Kohli, highlighting that Kohli’s influence and approach to the game are far better. He pointed out Kohli’s praise for Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar, in contrast to what he regarded as Babar’s false inspiration.
“We often hear comparisons between Babar Azam and Virat Kohli. But who is Kohli’s hero? It’s Sachin Tendulkar, a man of the 100th century. Kohli is chasing his legacy,” Akhtar said. I said.
The former Pacer went further and criticised Babar’s choice of role model.
“Who is the role model for Babar Azam? Don’t name the cricketers, but you chose the wrong role model. Your thought process is wrong. You were a scam from the start.” he added.
Already under pressure, Babar managed 23 runs on 26 balls with just 23 runs despite hitting five boundaries in a high stakes encounter. Pakistan set a target of 241, while India chased comfortably with 42.3 overs, securing a six-wicket victory.
Ahtar also praised Kohli, who fixed India’s pursuit into an unbeaten century.
“When Kohli plays against Pakistan, you just know that he gets a hundred. He is a modern legend and a white ball run machine. There is no debate about his greatness,” he said. I said that.
Defending champion Pakistan is being eliminated from the tournament alongside Bangladesh. Their title defense began with a loss to New Zealand, followed by a loss to India in Dubai, where Kohli’s 100* led to victory.
ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 will continue until March 9th.
