History of International Women’s Day

The United Nations started celebrating Women’s Day on March 8, 1975, but before that there was an exercise to celebrate it once in 1909. In fact, in 1909, Women’s Day was celebrated on February 28 for the first time in America. The day was chosen by the Socialist Party of America to honor the 1908 garment workers’ strike in New York. At the same time, for the first time, on February 28, celebrating Women’s Day, Russian women entered a protest against the First World War.

In 1917 Russian women went on strike for bread and peace. The strike began on the last Sunday of February. It was a historic strike and when the Czar of Russia left power, the interim government there gave women the right to vote. Women in Europe held rallies on March 8 to support peace activists.
